COINS FOUND IN POT SHAFT

Coins found in Pot Shaft.  The picture shows the coins on the day of their discovery.  The coins were found about 2 metres below the surface.  They date from the late fourth century and have been micro-excavated from the pot shown in the photo by Manchester Museum. 

(Left) Pot Shaft. The shaft itself was cleared completely, planned and sectioned throughout and recorded in detail.  The picture to the left shows work underway during the archaeological investigation at Engine Vein.  Stone hammers were found in the infill and a layer of wood at the bottom was dated to the first century AD.
