GENERAL HISTORY

19th CENTURY

Pillar and Post passage. This rarely visited section of Wood Mine contains a rock pillar to hold up the roof and a wooden support behind it.  Wood is unusual in the mines as little artificial support was required.  The mine is typical of 19th century workings where the main ore was malachite, visible at the base of the pillar.

(Left) Twisted Pillar Cavern This picture shows the cavern of the Twisted Pillar in West Mine which give some idea of the size of the later workings.
