Repeal of Royal Mines law
1688 & 1692
In the caving and mining world…
The Royal Mines Act was repealed in two stages thus allowing copper mining to resume in Great Britain. Before this time, copper mining was a Crown monopoly. The 1688 Act was brief and to the point: "Noe Mine of Copper Tin Iron or Lead shall hereafter be adjudged reputed or taken to be a Royall Mine although Gold or Silver may be extracted out of the same." The 1693 Act clarified some points. These Acts are still on the statute books!
