From 1870 to 1877 there was a drop in the output of the mines as the best ore deposits became depleted. New regulations in 1872 meant that the maps of the mines had to be deposited with the Mine Inspector after closure. In 1874, the company was working in the Field area and the wooden shovel and numerous hammerstones were found in opencast workings.
