At Alderley Edge…
During the war, there was thought of making an air-raid shelter in West Mine but this was obviously abandoned. It is quite possible that thought was also given to using the mines as an undergound store for munitions. However, none of this happened and the mines became a weekend playground for young and old. The sandhills attracted picnickers and people "sledging" down on tin trays. There was periodical trouble in the town of Alderley Edge leading to insistence by locals that the mines should be permanently closed.
